Getting a Bedroom Genuinely Dark: Curtains, Gaps and Light You Forgot About

Blackout curtains are sold as a complete solution to a light bedroom, and they rarely deliver one. The fabric usually performs as advertised. The failure is almost always around the edges, where light enters through gaps that no lining can address, and where most people never think to look.

Why the Fabric Is Not the Problem

A proper blackout lining is a coated cloth that passes almost no light through its face. Hold a panel to a bright window and you will see how little gets through. Then stand in the room with the curtains closed and you will see a bright halo at the top, the sides and the floor. That halo is the entire problem.

The Four Gaps That Matter

Light enters above the track, down each side where the curtain hangs short of the wall, and along the floor. A track fixed to the ceiling or fitted with a pelmet kills the first. Curtains extended at least fifteen centimetres beyond the reveal on each side kill the second. Curtains that touch the floor kill the third.

Weight and Drape

Heavy curtains hang closer to the wall and gape less at the leading edge, which is a practical argument for weight rather than a decorative one. The same principle applies to bedding: substantial textiles sit where you put them and light ones drift. Ranges such as Love’s Cabin that state fabric weight let you predict how a piece will actually hang rather than guessing from a photograph.

Light Sources Inside the Room

  • Standby indicators on chargers, televisions and extension leads.
  • The gap under the bedroom door, especially onto a lit landing.
  • Illuminated alarm clocks facing directly at the pillow.
  • Streetlight through a fanlight or a door glazed panel.
  • Phone screens on a bedside table, which defeat every curtain ever hung.

Cheaper Alternatives to Full Curtains

A blackout roller blind fitted inside the reveal with side channels blocks better than curtains costing several times more, because the channels seal the edges. For a rented room, temporary blackout panels that attach with adhesive hooks around the reveal are unglamorous and effective. A lined curtain over a fitted blind is the belt-and-braces answer.

Darkness Is Not the Only Variable

People chasing total darkness sometimes ignore two things that matter as much: room temperature and air movement. A pitch-black room that is too warm is not a room you sleep well in. If sleep is a persistent difficulty rather than an occasional one, it is worth speaking to a doctor rather than buying successive layers of window treatment.

Testing Before You Commit

Go into the bedroom in daylight, close everything, and sit still for two minutes until your eyes adjust. Every leak becomes obvious, and you will usually find that the biggest one costs almost nothing to fix. Doing that test first stops people replacing perfectly good curtains that were never the reason the room was bright.
